Acambis is a vaccine company developing novel vaccines that address significant unmet medical needs or substantially improve upon current standards of care. In September 2008, Acambis was acquired by sanofi pasteur, the vaccines division of the sanofi-aventis Group, and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sanofi Pasteur Holding.
Sanofi Pasteur is a major player in the vaccines industry, with net sales of €2,778 million in 2007 and with leading vaccines in five areas: paediatric combination vaccines; influenza vaccines; adult and adolescent booster vaccines; meningitis vaccines; and travel, endemic and measles, mumps and rubella vaccines. It provided more than 1.6 billion doses of vaccine in 2007, making it possible to immunise more than 500 million people across the globe. Acambis and sanofi pasteur have enjoyed a long and successful relationship for more than ten years and, prior to the acquisition, had partnership agreements relating to three of Acambis' key vaccine development programmes.
Acambis' product portfolio includes:
A licensed smallpox vaccine, ACAM2000®, for which we have a contract with the US Government;
Three late- and mid-stage programmes derived from our proprietary ChimeriVax™ technology platform* against Japanese encephalitis, dengue and West Nile; and
Early-stage programme targeting potentially significant markets in the fields of C. difficile, influenza and genital herpes.
